First Learning Reflection

I have little knowledge of OERs, but being a Librarian in a University, think it is important to keep up to date with it. So far have enjoyed the definition via the Mooc, while I had a inkling of an idea that it is free education, it has been good to learn the focus on sharing and how to make it possible with fair licensing. So slowly getting my head around it. The emphasis on sharing is something I never thought about much in this context. I liked the point that sharing is the best way be learn, by what we share with others, and what they share with us and how in the past we made notes in margins of our books, or highlighted key texts and how this type of note taking has moved online, blogs, microblogs, where we can not only share this information with others but have it commented on. The is teaching a profession or vocation question made me think well mostly profession but in the light of OERs, if knowledge and teaching is offered at no cost throught freely shared resources, it resembles more of a vocation? Not sure, bit of both. Desmond Tutu video on digital freedom was quite good. I thought his statement that "There are those who take the fruits of the mind, and dish them out in metered amounts for a fee, " is very true, i.e. there are those who teach only to be paid, that there are those who can't afford a fee or might not have access, so this provides an avenue. I'm not all that well versed in copyright issues, but can see did enjoy Desmond Tutu's end of the video where he points out after his talk, on open access and creative commons license that the video itself is under CC. Nice touch. I would like to learn about the licensing aspect, as I am not all that clear on it either, but I have am definately learnt new things. The combination of videos as well as readings and also reading other blog entries, make the learning experience more enjoyable and, for me at least easier to retain information.

First Post

Hi, I'm Nick doing my first Mooc on OERu. This activity requires I set up a blog. I have set up up blogs before, but never really used them much and never in this context. So far this activity has been fine although it is sometimes hard to find what I am looking for. I'm still in orientation mode, but I can always go back here for the next exercise. For some reasons images wont upload right now, so I will get back to that. Now I will add a label.
